In the vein of my last post I find myself asking why I am bothering to maintain this site. In the last week or so I have gotten a whopping 20 unique hits. I am willing to bet that 19 of those are search engine bots or spammers with the remaining hit coming from myself. I have no site traffic, I have no subscribers to my blog (both feed counts are my own for monitoring purposes - one for work and home) and generally have nothing important to say. Yet, I continue to update this blog 3-4 four times a month and spend countless hours tweaking functions of my site.
So why do I bother? Some of it has to do with personal pride in my work. I like the layout of my site. I think it screams what my personality and interests are all about. This site is my little safe haven that only h@xorZ to take away from me (well that forgetting to pay my bill). As I mentioned before, when I was in high school having your own website, let alone domain name was a big deal. Domains used to cost hundreds of dollars. For the most part you were stuck with using free service like GeoCities. Now hosting and domains are affordable and sometimes free. But I still feel no matter what you pay your level of works shows through on your site.
Why else do I bother? Because if someone Googles me I would rather them find this site than some other site that may reference me or contain details on the interwebs. Here, I can control all my content. I can't control what others post or write about me on other sites. But having a number one ranking on Google helps me to insure that it is unlikely people will continue to look for information about me elsewhere. I don't have to worry about any suspicious YouTube videos or compromising pictures. The seeker will come to this site and see that overall I'm pretty boring.
In other words I bother to keep this site up because I'm bored and because I can.
