I was bored so I decided to do some analysis of my BrightKite friends. BrightKite is a mirco-blogging service that allows users to post notes or photos with captions of 140 characters or less. BrightKite is different from other micro-blogging services such as Twitter since it allows you to tag your posts with the location you are at. I didn't have an easy way to collect stats so I looked at the profile of every person on my friends list and recorded their age and sex. If their age was not give I left it blank. Sex was the easiest stat to look at. On my list 65% are male and 35% are female. I checked to see how this compared to my friends on Facebook and the ratio is a little more even at 59% Male, 41% Female.
I found the stats on age to be interesting. The average age of my friends that listed an age is 30.36. This was older than I expected for a site like this. However, I don't expect that number to be accurate as 23% of my friends did not provide an age. Out of all my friends 23% of males did not list an age and 24% of females did not list an age. The range was 26 (21-47). Not that I know a lot of people under 21 in real life, but I surprised that 21 was the lower limit. And as I am thinking about it now, I am not sure I have ever seen users that were younger than that on the site at all.
Now what does all of this mean? From what I can tell, absolutely nothing. But, I figured I would share.
